My 12th foster pup <3
She is a sweety, smart, and affectionate. She is recovering from a hernia but otherwise gets along with Roo and iris quite well.

The end is nigh
All good things must come to an end.
I am back in the Aloha State, though, so I can't really complain. Plus, two of my days in Korea were spent in bed and "praying to the porcelain goddess", as I caught a stomach bug and was quite ill. Still, I managed to see a good part of Gyeongju (though not all of it -- and I missed Yangdong village altogether), went out in Hongdae on my last evening in Seoul, saw Nanta (an Iron Chef meets Stomp musical), and did a walking tour of Insadong and Gangnam on my first Sunday -- and final day in Korea.
I hopped on a plane Sunday evening and arrived in Honolulu Sunday morning (time warp!). So my second Sunday was spent here, unpacking, cleaning, and working. I'm going to bed soon. I'm tired. Tomorrow begins a kind of marathon 4-day week. It'll be the first day of the 4th quarter at 'Iolani (HOORAY! I can't wait to be done with the school year!), then on Wed and Thur nights I'm teaching classes at Phoenix. YIKES. Add to that two mega-deadlines for my PhD and call me cooked.
I am looking forward to Friday already.
But Korea was awesome. I got to see enough, but now I feel like I need to go back and finish what I started. All in due time...
I prob won't be updating for a while, now that my adventuring is over until... well... life is an adventure, so who knows.
Ciao for now!

Seoul and Soju
I'm in Busan right now sipping on a $1.50 soju (like vodka) from the convenience store and waiting to go to the cinema to watch Oz. Should be very interesting! :) Watching a movie in a foreign country always is.
The flight to Seoul was a lot longer than I thought it would be -- almost 11 hours! I made it okay and Brett (my friend from Iolani) picked me up at the airport. We walked around his neighborhood until it started raining. Then we had some spicy rice soup and went to sleep at 9.
We woke up at 8:30 and headed to the Seoul Station to catch my 10:30 train to Busan. I treated him to a bi bim bap and spicy squid and rice breakfast (there are no rules for breakfast!) and then I made it to my hostel in Haeundae at 2. I settled in for a little and then walked around town until 6. It's almost 8 p.m. and I'm feeling pretty darn tired, but I want to stay up later, so I'm going to see Oz in about an hour...
Tomorrow I plan on visiting Busan's city center -- check out the fish market, head up to the Beomeosa Temple, take a nap, then have dinner at Centrum City and rest in the evening at Spaland. :) The following day I'm going to check out Yonggongsa Temple and then head to Gyeongju, Korea's cultural capital, for some sightseeing.
On Thursday night I have to stay up 'til 2 p.m. (for my PhD tutorial), so I need to start training my body now! Plus, I'll be heading back to Seoul on Friday and for the weekend, and I definitely plan on going out on Saturday night 'til at least that hour.
Of course, when I get back I'm going to be exhausted. I have to teach at Phoenix 'til 10 p.m. on Wednesday AND Friday next week, but let's not think about that quite yet. I want to enjoy my time in Korea, after all...

Plans for Korea
Leaving tomorrow for Korea! I am very excited. I already have a rough plan of my trip:
arrive Sunday in Seoul -- stay with my friend Brett
take the fast train to Busan on Monday -- stay in a hostel near the beach for two nights
take the bust to Gyeongju on Wednesday -- stay in a hostel in town for two nights
head back to Seoul on Friday -- leave on Sunday
This week back in Hawaii flew by! Chris and I saw a really good movie called "Warm Bodies" -- a zombie romantic comedy. I really liked it. :) Last night, Chelsea and I went to a social mixer thing at Pearl. Somehow I am really hungover today.
I am finishing up comments for third quarter. Then I need to plan for the Phoenix courses I'll be teaching soon. Then it's time to pack and stay over at the star house tonight because my flight is in the morning.
More from the "Land of the Morning Calm." I hope to get to the bottom of that epithet as I bathe in a thermal hot spring...

Bath Time Over :(
Two weeks gone in a flash.
I was really grateful for the time spent in Bath. I don’t know where to begin reflecting
because I could go on and on….
Lizzie came to visit me on Sunday and we caught up over
lunch, walked around town, toured the Roman Baths and the Jane Austin
museum. She’s finishing her coursework
at Oxford and will get her degree in Arabic studies from Stanford soon.
The week was spent attending sessions at Corsham Court and
Newton Park. I learned a lot from the
sessions with Paul Evans, Richard Kerridge, Gail Simmons, and Terry
Gifford. I’m figuring out a better
structure for my book and got some great ideas about the topics of investigation
for my contextualizing research.
I also attended three lit festival events. Mark Grist is a poet-rapper and had a great
“performance” about how he became a teacher-rockstar-poet. Jean Sprackland produced a beautiful book
called Strands about discoveries from
a year of beachcombing in northern England.
Sandi Toksvig talked about her travels around the world and her new
book, Valentine Grey. These events helped me understand the
importance of a writer’s commitment to the craft.
I read my work to an audience three times this week. It was really good practice! I’m looking forward to returning to Hawaii
and reading some more.
Last night, my friend Tara drove down and hung out with
me. It was great to see her!
Altogether, my time in Bath really inspired me to be
committed to my writing and I am excited about being a writer next year. It’s going to be hard work, but also, I hope a
time of great productivity and success.
I’m on the plane heading home now, and am trying to prepare
mentally/emotionally for the next four days back at ‘Iolani, and then the week
following in Korea. I feel like I
already have one foot out the door at ‘Iolani, so I hope I can finish the last
quarter in strong fashion…

Bath

Bath is going well! Residency started on Wednesday, and it's been fun and useful. I finally feel like I'm on the right track, but I have a long way to go too. Nicole, who's a professional fiction writer and started the program with me, has 140 pages done, which is twice as much as what I have. But it is what it is. It's hard to write as much as I'd like to, and when I do sit down to write I sometimes experience writer's block or don't know where to start.
Bath itself is gorgeous! I'm really enjoying my time here. This weekend's been really lively and fun. It was bustling all day yesterday, so I walked around for a few hours -- went to the farmer's market and a performance of August Wilson's "Fences" at the Theatre Royal. Today, my old student Lizzie is visiting for the day. :)More later...
